Coimbatore

Coimbatore is any entrepreneur's dream. It remains a city where family bonds are strong and a fusion of the traditional and the modern is the secret of success. The region's rich black soil which contributed to the city's flourishing agrarian economy, was later the very foundation for the establishment of its famous textile industry. The result? A solid economy and a reputation as one of the greatest industrial centres in South India .

For travellers, Coimbatore is largely a transport junction, a convenient stop to head to the famed hill stations of Ooty or Kodaikanal. That may change though. The city – known as India's motorsports capital - is home to a Formula 3 circuit and several Go Kart circuits, hosts national rallies throughout the year and is tipped to host India's first F1 race in the near future.

A leader of a small cult known as "IRULAS" six hundred years ago built the temple situated in the heart of the City. The small village was also named "Covanputhur" after the leader of this group, whose name was "Covan". According to the "Cholan Poorva Pattayam" in the Madras oriental Manuscript library this Covanputhur later changed as Coimbatore . This ancient temple was situated in the north of Coimbatore near Sanganur stream. Later when there was a fear "Chera" invasion the illangosar tribe which was ruling at that time, built a new fort and to guard this fort, they built a temple and named the predominant deity as Koniamman of this temple. After the tribes ruling came to an end, the temple also had a sluggish period. Realizing the importance of this temple, during the Mysore dynasty one of its kings renovated the temple and conservated the Devi Koniamman in the style of "Mahisasuramardhini". From then on until today goddess Konniamman blesses her people with love and grace.

The people of Coimbatore have strong belief in the powers of this goddess. The deity grants her followers, whatever they want when they pray her with all sincerity and faith. The sculptural beauty of the present statue is marvelous. Number of festivals are celebrated in this temple, but the annual Car Festival is celebrated with all pomp and pageantry.
